The General Education Center (GEC) was established on August 1, 2013, as a first-class academic unit devoted to the teaching, research, and promotion of general education at NTOU. It is organized by four sections: Language Education, Liberal Arts Education, Physical Education, Chinese Language Center, and Arts and Cultural Center.

The "Common Courses Office" was reorganized to "Humanities and Education Center" in 2004, and subsequently turned into the "General Education Teaching Center" in 2005, and into the "General Education Center" in 2013. Starting from the 2013 academic year, the general education curriculum, a total of 28 credits, consists of 6 credits of the basic courses (Chinese), 6 credits of basic courses (foreign language), and 16 credits of liberal arts courses (in eight domains). At the same time, in 2013, the "General Education Advisory Committee" was established, as a remarkable milestone towards the reform of general education at NTOU.

The General Education Center devotes its effort to teaching and research evenly. The Center has 12 full-time teachers, all with doctoral degree, including 2 professors, 4 associate professors and 6 assistant professors.
